So then, warm drinks in hand, we continued our slow little amble through New Edinburgh. As usual, we walked down Avon Lane, since I find it much more visually interesting than the front streets of the neighbourhood.

Things were fairly busy since there was a sort of community art show going on. Although we didn’t take the entire thing in, we did at least stop in at MacKay United Church‘s community hall, where a number of vendors were set up.

I almost purchased a lovely necklace in a sort of seafoam colour that would perfectly match a dress and cardigan I recently thrifted, but ultimately decided against it after standing there hemming and hawing.

We did had a competing priority, after all.

Books!

(Shocking, I know.)

But when we’re in New Edinburgh, we have a rule that we must stop in at Books on Beechwood.1

Must.

It’s a risk we accept with a stoic sense of duty, but we accept it with grace and candour. And with a tote bag: I came out with three books (Big Swiss, by Jen Beagin; The Hunger We Pass Down, by Jen Sookfong Lee; and The Trick is to Keep Breathing by Janice Galloway) and Kathleen with one: Gary Barwin’s The Comedian’s Book of the Dead.

  1. We have a similar rule for Old Ottawa East (Singing Pebble), Old Ottawa South (Black Squirrel), The Glebe (Octopus), Hintonburg (Spaniel’s Tale), and even Almonte (Mill Street Books). If we applied the rule to Centretown where we live, we’d never leave Perfect Books and the cats would get worried. The employees would probably be a little annoyed too. ↩︎
