Sometimes it turns out that a fear of missing out is just plain old missing out. I did not think that when I deleted my last Instagram account in 2022 that information about events would just …not be available anywhere else.
Noticing that small businesses I like and seemingly all queer events are at least mainly present on the platform, however terrible, I broke down before leaving for Toronto and opened a new account.
… and within one hour, I learned that Gwen Aube would be at Another Story on Roncesvalles reading from her Missed Connections With Tall Girls: the very sort of event that I was hoping to learn about and attend.
Having decided that I would most definitely be there, I texted my sister to ask if I should reserve one, two, or three tickets. She responded with “two!” (her husband would be at work across town), and we suddenly had early evening plans.
While I would have gone either way, it was nice that she was happy to join me in taking in a little trans poetry and discovering for herself that when you give a bunch of trans people an audience and open mic, you’re quite likely to laugh. A whole lot.1
I also had a wonderful time at this reading of Gwen Aube’s Missed Connections with Tall Girls last night! A lot of fun, there was so much laughter!

Our spirits lifted further, once finished, we slowly walked back up Roncesvalles toward the Dundas West subway station, making photos along the way.
We would meet again the following day around 11, when I would be checking out of my hotel room. We would have time to stash my suitcase at Union, visit Downtown Camera, and enjoy nice lunch before waiting for my mid-afternoon train.

- It probably didn’t hurt that it was emcee’d by Alex of Haus of Decline, but really, the laughs were throughout the hour reading. ↩︎
