The timing was almost a little too good to be a coincidence. Almost as soon as Kathleen flipped our kitchen calendar from October to November (reading aloud the reliably cheesy inspirational statement of the month), the daytime high temperatures lost a few degrees.
The chill is in the air, and we are rushing headlong into the winter.
I think like many Canadians, we have a hard time with the chilly season. The cold really is unpleasant much of the time – especially if you’re not so much into winter activities – and we sure are reverting where winter sidewalk maintenance is concerned.
Nevertheless, I also find winter gorgeous. Especially on a sunny December or January day where a gentle breeze blows crystalline snowflakes from rooftops and trees. It really feels as if we’re in a snow globe.
This was the little mental pathway for today’s resurfaced photos.
It’s not often that I get out to make photos while it’s snowing, but Kathleen had an appointment for a pedicure at a salon in Lowertown (I wasn’t in the mood for one), and I decided that I wanted a little winter magic.
I tend to be a little too precious about my cameras and don’t usually feel comfortable getting them wet.
It’s a bit silly though.
Perfectly operational 1990s plastic fantastic cameras can be had for very little and, while not weather-proofed in the same way that professional cameras are, tend to resist snowflakes (be they fine, regular, or goose down) with ease. Almost like they were designed for it.
In part to capture the seasonal delights and in part to chase away winter doldrums this year, I hope to get myself outside more often this winter. I have a new warm coat, fresh batteries for my Rebel G, and I want to make more photos like those in the little gallery above!
