Charlotte Makes Photos

A girl and her cameras 💜

On Tuesday morning, I decided that I would do something I don’t normally do: make black-and-white photos with a colour filter. In this case, I chose an orange one.

There isn’t any particular reason I don’t use them often. Well, that’s telling a bit of a porky. It’s that no matter what a camera’s manual says and that logic and science and engineering and fact may suggest, I’ve yet to meet a camera for which I don’t have to compensate for its presence.

Each and every time and each and every camera I’ve chosen not to, I’ve ended up with underexposed photos. Knowing this, I’ve sometimes overcompensated for the difference and ended up with well-overexposed photos.

The risk associated with purchasing the least expensive set of filters possible: the +/- EV is neither calculated nor printed on the ring. I think this year I’ve got the hang of it though. +⅓ stop for the yellow, +⅔ stop for the orange, and +1 stop for the red.
