Confirming a Favourite Combination

Written by

One thing I like to do before going on a trip is to make sure any developer that I have mixed in advance works. Not that it has ever happened, but I would be upset if I were to return home with rolls only to develop them and find out that I hadn’t mixed it correctly or something was otherwise off.

What an upsetting way to lose vacation photos that would be!

So in advance of my little trip to Toronto on Monday, I mixed some of Flic Film’s version of D-96 since I intend to use Lomo Potsdam and Eastman Double-X for making black-and-white photos. Of course, this meant I needed a little test.

The climate, in its attempt to keep the “Good” in Good Friday, decided that higher temperatures were in order, and a daytime high of 18℃ was forecast. While the thermometer said so and people in various states of lighter dress, I found the breeze still chilly, but I was able to get away with a lighter knit hat and gloves. Still, with so many people out and cheerful, it was nice to be out and about.

As for the photos? Well, they’re all familiar, but my goal was largely to ensure that the D-96 I mixed worked well (✅) and use a film and developer combination that I positively adore (✅✅).

For colour photos, I mixed a new batch of C-41 chemistry yesterday morning, so today’s test will be Flic Film Elektra 100 [Kodak Aerocolor IV] exposed during a walk through Sandy Hill this morning. Although I hope there will be sun (the skies are clear as I write this), the forecast is showing that the clouds are likely to begin to gather before we leave for our walk.

Either way, the testing must be done, since I leave on a Monday morning train!
