New Pearl, Who’s This? (2024)

Written by

Since I’m trying to be a good sport in my participation in the #FP4Party on Bluesky and not share FP4+ photos until the week of April 13, I will not be posting photos from the roll I made yesterday after work.

Instead, since I used the Konica Pearl to make those photos, I was reminded that it was at about this time of year in 2024 that I received the camera from an eBay seller in Japan and decided to revisit that first test roll of Kodak Gold.

While the photos aren’t anything special (I was testing a camera after all), I remember two things: (a) it was really cold that day; and (b) when I received the scans back from the lab, I knew that the Pearl was really something special. Konica’s lenses from the 1950s have properties that I find just lovely.

I was also slowly coming to the realization that the cold shoe meter that I have is …less than it ought to be. Just as the reviews indicated and just as I ignored because it was about half the price of its competitors.

As it turns out, there was a reason for that!
