Two Rolls and one Disquieted Atmosphere (2020)

Written by

Rescanning these rolls was a little bit of an emotional adventure, I have to admit. I had only vaguely remembered going on this walk. It was fairly early on into COVID-19 and everything was, well, just. so. quiet. And uncomfortable.

Traffic had disappeared and most people did too. The silence stood out.

But what stood out even more were those who remained out and about. Those in relative comfort were in (and around) their homes, but those who have greater needs: those without (reliable) housing, those facing addictions, those who could use more psychiatric care than they’re receiving.

They were out. They were feeling it. And while out, I was too.

As I was re-scanning these rolls, I remembered how I felt when I returned home from this walk.

Mostly disturbed.

Mostly scared.

Serendipitous Re-creation

This is one of those rare situations where I have inadvertently re-created an archival photo. In this case, a photo from the CMHC‘s collection, made in 1966.

From a photo-making standpoint, I don’t think either of us really quite stuck the landing, but I think the 1966 photo is more compelling than mine.
