Unlike the gorgeous Wednesday in Lunenburg, Thursday promised – and delivered – a wet and overcast day.
Perfect weather for visiting museums!
We met up with my Mom, who also loves museums and is largely responsible for my love of them, and visited the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. Much like the art gallery on Monday, I had never been and Kathleen’s last visit was in 2017, after she spent time working in British Columbia.
The Maritime Museum was well-curated and thought out, as well as interesting. Staff was, of course, positively lovely.
My only gripe, such that I may have had one, was that the proportion of floor space given the model ships was, I felt, a little out of proportion. I would have also liked to have seen more of the social eye that defined the Titanic and Halifax Explosion exhibits carried through into more of their other collections.
With the rain (mostly) stopped, we decided to head down the waterfront toward Pier 21, our next museum. Since it was getting close to noon, we planned to stop somewhere along the way for lunch. Kathleen and I aren’t so familiar with the restaurants on the waterfront, so since Mom at eaten at – and enjoyed – Bicycle Thief, we chose to stop there.
(Quite tasty!)
We then made our way to Pier 21, the Canadian Museum of Immigration. None of us had even been to this museum and in fact, it was Kathleen’s last of Canada’s national museums to visit!
We all felt that it was well-done and the approach taken for a museum with a fairly low proportion of artifacts was both inventive and immersive. Most of the other patrons seemed to feel the same way, if their lingering, reading, and when in groups, discussions mean anything.
After leaving the museum, we slowly made our way back up the waterfront toward the ferry terminal. After crossing over, my Mom made her way back home and we went back to Cole Harbour for a rest.
Later on in the evening, we would return to Alderney to have a nice meal with one of Kathleen’s oldest friends and her husband at the Wooden Monkey.
(Quite tasty!)

Friday (September 19) was our last full day in town, and I was fully out of inspiration for making photos. Though not out of film, the cameras stayed put while we went out.
Later that morning, we met up with my Mom at her condo to return her car and have a nice lunch. We hopped the ferry to Halifax waterfront for a place called Bar Sofia for lunch.
(Quite tasty!)
We just had one more thing planned for our vacation: dinner with Kathleen’s Dad. As we have come to do when we visit, we decided to meet at Dartmouth Crossing and to choose a restaurant. While it’s not really halfway between where we were staying and where he lives (17 minutes vs. 45), it’s close enough for horseshoes to be considered fair!
On Saturday, we returned home.
While we always love a good vacation, few things feel quite as good as returning home to sleep in your own bed.
