Once we finished our exploration of the town itself, we headed down to the waterfront. Lunenburg is, afterall, defined by the ocean and by the fishing industry specifically. If you’ve had any Captain High Liner in your freezer, you’ve had a little bit of Lunenburg in your kitchen.
While that wouldn’t be enough to attract me (I *hated* fish Fridays and fish sticks were the source of my biggest ‘I don’t want it’ dinner stand growing up), it felt wrong not to visit the waterfront and see the boats, nets, and the other accoutrements of the industry.
We then had two more things to do:
- Pick up a nice Lunenburg ‘thank-you’ mug for my Mom for using her car; and
- Ice cream! We found a nice place for ice cream. Kathleen had black raspberry (or was it cherry?) cheesecake and I had birthday cake (because I love sprinkles).
It was then around 2:30, our cones consumed, and the spirit of exploration had left us. It was time to retrieve the car and drive back to Cole Harbour.

September in Nova Scotia, just before hurricane season begins, comes with some of the nicest weather you might want. It’s summerlike without the punitive temperatures (or Ontario-grade humidity) of July. The Atlantic’s breezes keep things in check.
This also means that it’s a popular time to visit.
A very popular time to visit.
Between Peggy’s Cove last year and Lunenburg this year, it also ends up feeling too busy. Seniors’ tours, tour groups, cruise ship charters, retirees, families, charming and delightful same-sex couples in borrowed cars (ahem), all visit the better-known places making it crowded and congested, but not at all like a city.
Since we’re all tourists, it’s more like house full of lost and half-charged roombas.
While it’s doubtlessly those crowds that make most of these shops, services, and events possible to support, it also makes enjoying them and the town more challenging. Perhaps next time we’re in the area, we could choose a lesser-known-but-still-painfully-cute seaside town to visit for a day.
