We have very few rules when travelling. Two, really. The first is that we try our best not to eat at restaurants that we already have at home in Ottawa. It doesn’t seem right to visit somewhere else only to recreate the experiences that we can have at home. Every city has at least a few places that are really good and not already represented here.

The other rule?

We can do one expensive and cheesy touristy thing while away.

Last year, it was a visit to The Distillery with a meal at Mill Street, where we were probably the closest to being “local” outside of the staff.

This year?

A joust!

Medieval Times!

I remember pretty well when it opened in Toronto in the 1990s and the commercials were on television regularly. We really wanted to go, but larger-scale dinner theatre isn’t exactly …inexpensive, so it was not really a possibility then. It might have also been on a little too cheesy to overcome issues of the wallet. For her part, as a Bluenoser, Kathleen didn’t get the advertisements growing up, but has been very interested in historical sewing and costuming for some time.

We’re also a very cheesy couple, and we have taken up the mantle with pride!

For as cheesy as it all was, we had a great time!

We were seated in the green section, where we were encouraged to cheer for the green knight (I named him Eric. He looked more like an Eric to me than the Lord Somethingorother the script called for) from beneath our paper crowns as we dined – sans utensils 😮 – on a half-chicken dinner.

Kathleen has also been blogging about our vacation!
