I didn’t recall the forecast having more than a day’s worth of snow in it.

I remember the lil’ snowflakes being present intermittently in the weather app, but not across the day.

Sure enough, as Wednesday wore on, the view of the Ottawa River from my cubicle remained snowy and I was getting increasingly distracted with thoughts of loading that roll of Eastman Double-X in my purse into the camera and getting out to make the season’s first real snowy photos.

I actually quite like the snow. At least, I like the look of it and the feel of it.1

Snow makes wanting to feel cozy on the couch after being out so much better. I especially love the earlier snows for making photos. Thanks to how reflective it is, it’s the snow that brings up the ambient brightness, just a touch, in defiance of a sun that has abandoned us until the spring.

  1. What I don’t like about the snow is less this frozen precipitation and more the noticeable decline in the city’s performance maintaining sidewalks and pathways during the season over the last 10 years or so. Combined with awful wavy and badly maintained sidewalks, you’ve got to be on guard! ↩︎
